Ghana: Americans Are Often Called Rude Here

There are many things that Americans get called, I’ve written about this before but we are called rude here for things we were raised to do like they were raised to do

Many Blacks in America are used to greeting one another with something as simple as a ‘Head Nod’. It means many things to us, “Hey you good?”, “I see you my sister/brother”, “What’s Up?” We accept it as recognition of one another.

Lately I’ve been called rude, several times actually in one week. Here is what I did wrong according to Ghanians.

At police headquarters I knocked on a closed door, when I was told to come in I came in. I said “Hello, I’m lo…” I was cut off because I didn’t fully enter the room, I saw it was almost empty and the investigator I was there to see was not there. So I entered the room fully and finished my sentence, “I’m looking for Charles”. A woman that snapped at me, telling me when you enter a room you greet everyone. Wait I said Hello as soon as I opened the door, I then said to her, “Hello!” She went on to scream at me actually raising her voice.
