Insecurity On The Rise In West African Nations
Higher prices, religious battles, poor leadership, starvation and terrorism is on the rise throughout West Africa
Ghana has been alerted to several threats of possible terror attacks, since 2021. Now the news media has been given the green light to alert the nations citizens. Many Ghanians still don’t believe the news, dismissing it as fake. Many are struggling with low wages, much higher prices on everything they need to use or eat.
In February of 2022 West African leaders held an emergency summit in the capital Accra, Ghana in response to a recent spate of coups in the region.
The talks on Thursday were initiated after Burkina Faso on January 24 became the third member of the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to be overtaken by the military.
There were also talks of a coup happening in Ghana, they arrested one man that they ‘claimed’ to be the leader of those statements. Even though many citizens in the nation took to social media calling for the President’s removal as many more are still in favor of a coup in what Ghanians call the “most peaceful African country”, without any facts or statistics to back their claims. Currently Ghana might be the most peaceful country in West Africa. Even with a 40% increase in crime over the last few months.
There is some unconfirmed talk of listing Nigeria as a ‘failed state’. A term no longer really in use as it has changed to fragile states. What exactly does that mean? Here are a list of countries on the ‘fragile state’ list. This means that these countries are just that fragile, on the verge of collapse.
They have:
Loss of control of its territory, or of the monopoly on the legitimate use of physical force
Erosion of legitimate authority to make collective decisions
Inability to provide public services
Inability to interact with other states as a full member of the international community
